SWCD PROMOTING COVER CROPS

Cover Crops have been the main topic of discussion of the Fulton County Soil and Water Conservation Board. We recently held a joint meeting with the Marshall County SWCD Board to inform farmers of the area on Healthy Soils and the advantages of planting cover crops. The speakers discussed soil science, proper management of cover crops, different seeding recommendations as well as different planting options.

Fulton County SWCD applied for a joint Clean Water Indiana Grant with Pulaski County SWCD and White County SWCD for cover crop incentives for farmers. We received word in March that this Clean Water Indiana Grant had been approved in the amount of $40,000. It is to be divided between the three counties as an incentive to plant cover crops. The counties have 3 years or less to use and match this funding.

If you are planning on planting cover crops this fall it would be a good idea to contact your seed supplier now as it is anticipated that good cover crop seed might be in short supply this fall.

If you are interested in receiving cost share for your cover crops, contact the Fulton County SWCD Office, located in the USDA Building, 1252 E 100 S, Rochester, IN (574) 223-3220, Extension 3 or any of the Board. The Board members are Matt Harsh, Joe Rude, Mike Norman, Ross Burdge and Lanty Armstrong.

What We Do:

The Fulton County SWCD works in cooperation with local, state and national governmental agencies as well as with local organizations, the county extension agent and county landowners.

The SWCD’s function is to assist all of these entities in the wise use of the natural resources in Fulton County.

Nationally recognized speakers Hans Kok, Jamie Scott and Barry Fisher were on-site to instruct attendees on how to use cover crops, no-till and crop rotations to build soil tilth, reduce inputs and increase profitability.

Who We Are:

Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) are located in every county of Indiana. Cooperation with the SWCD is voluntary.

A Soil and Water Conservation District is a legal subdivision of State Government. The SWCD is responsible for leadership in the conservation of soil, water, and natural resources within its county boundaries. It is governed by five supervisors, three are elected and two are appointed for a term of three years and each is a resident of Fulton County. The Supervisors are guided by the Indiana District Law, Indiana Code IC 14-32-5-1.
